Youth Leadership Institute Summer Class of 2007
|
"When my mother first told me about the Greater Tucson Youth Leadership program I didn't think much about it, but I filled out the application and a couple of months later Dave Chandler called and invited me to the forst class. This class gave me more than I thought it could. From the inspiring speeches to the lessons on many ways to become a leader in our community and the chance to meet with people like Mayor Bob Walkup to discussions that concern us. Many of the youth today don't get a chance to do this. This program is a lot of work that took many people a lot of time to create..."

Based on the Greater Tucson Leadership's
issue-day model, the Youth Leadership Institute serves to inform, educate,
influence, re-direct and create new leaders from a diverse cross-section of high
school students in Tucson. Courses are taught by certified Community College Instructors
on staff at the Volunteer Center of Southern Arizona. There are three components:
-
educate youth about issues and potential solutions to our community's most pressing
concerns;
-
develop leadership skills; and
-
increase community involvement
Youth participants will have the opportunity to:
-
participate in a leadership program, which includes topics on livable communities, land use and environment, education, social services,
health care, immigration and border issues, and governmental services.
-
learn Pima Community College credits; and
-
demonstrate effective involvement in community issues by enrolling in the Youth
Boardsmanship Institute, being accepted at the University of Arizona and enrolling
in the Arizona Blue Chip Program, attending Pima Community College or joining school
and community organizations.
Volunteer requirements: Each participant will be required to attend all classes.
